WHALE RIDER
In a small New Zealand coastal village, the Maori face a great dilemma. In every generation, a male heir has always become the tribe's chief. So when her twin brother dies prematurely before he can inherit his post, Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes) is left to fight the clan's aging patriarch and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny. Written and directed by Niki Caro, from the novel by Witi Ihimaera.
Writer / Director Niki Caro talks about her own whale encounter! link below

Make The Grade Tutoring Program
An Alternative to Summer School and It Is Free
Make The Grade Tutoring Program is back and being offered “Free” to the entire community for the forth year. It is scheduled to begin July 5th at the Riverside Community Center for Spiritual Living 3891 Ridge Road Riverside California. The program will focus on strengthening the student’s reading, language arts, and math skills. The tutoring program is open to youth between the ages of 5 years old and 17 years old. Youth are placed in age appropriate groups which include grade school, middle school, and high school. It is fun yet effective in strengthening their academic skill. We also have special curriculum for teens in need of increasing their potentials on tests and in passing the High School Exit Exam. It is the perfect response to the budget cuts and an alternative for parents who are looking for affordable programs this summer to support their children in strengthening their academic skills. The Make the Grade staff consist of volunteers from the community which includes teachers, college students, and parents. They have partnered to make a difference in the life of a child. They will meet with the students twice a week for the entire month of July on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
A Parent Orientation and Registration is also scheduled this Saturday, June 18 & 25th from 10:00 am. – 11:30 a.m. at the center along with a special Self –Esteem Workshop for the youth. Interested parties can call (951) 683-2343 ext. 203 for more information or to register students in the program.

Our community theme for this year is A Sacred Journey: A year of Recognition, Realization and Renewal The Youth and Family Village has chosen the explore the Heroes Journey based on Joseph Campbels work. We have created themes that are age appropriate and a weekly scrap booking project to assit particpants in capturing thier own journey this year. You can assist us in the following ways this Sunday:
- Have your child bring thier notes and papers from last Sunday so that they can included it in thier scrap book.
- Have your child arrive between 10:30 and 10:50 to choose supplies for creating thier scrap book.(They are very picky when it comes to chosing materials. We want them to benefit from the whole experience.)
- Check in with your child afterwards. Ask them about thier experience. Experts say that you play an important role in grooming them as great communicators.
